Sustainable innovation isn't a luxury in today's competitive environments, yet some organizations succeed at it and others fail. Why?
Years ago, after drawing best practices from the many industries in which I'd worked or consulted, I had identified approximately 30 innovation drivers and enablers that I viewed as essential for sustainable innovation. When producing Orchestrating Sustainable Innovation, I confirmed these views with various senior leaders, best-selling authors, leading educators, and consultants.
While considering some metaphors that might differentiate this book from others, I discovered two critical leadership competencies that relate directly to the world of music: orchestration and improvisation. Like symphony orchestra leaders, successful innovators achieve mastery by building on past successes and time-tested traditions. And like jazz musicians, they continually team up with others to explore unknown territy and experiment with new themes.
Although we might associate musicians, visual artists, and brilliant inventors with innovation, history tells us that it can happen almost anywhere, when people open their minds to its many manifestations.
