We work with clients to utilize processes such as internal and external scanning, ensuring that strategic planning includes key elements such as: the organization's vision of the future, its mission, values, core competencies, current and potential markets, internal and external stakeholder analysis, competitor analysis, etc. We believe that strategic planning should lay the foundation for operations planning and should contain built-in mechanisms and processes for plan communication and strategy execution. Additionally, it should identify potential obstacles; prescribe feedback mechanisms for progress against the plan; and specify specific milestones for baseline monitoring and for recognizing achievement.
We believe it's critically important that organizations put equal focus on strategic planning and operations planning; yet many organizations don't even distinguish between the two. We define strategic planning as the process of identifying what needs to be done, how it needs to be done, and when. Operations planning should ensure that the strategies and tasks outlined in the strategic plan are implemented on schedule and as planned. Additionally, operations planning should be a dynamic process that ensures role clarity and alignment through continual scanning of the organization's internal and external environments and identification of potential barriers or obstacles. And most important, operating plans should contain accountability mechanisms for individuals and teams that monitor plan implementation through the review of timetables and project plans. __________________________________________________________________________________________
