Dr. Schimpff was the CEO of
the University of Maryland Medical Center, Chair of the Board of Governors of the Magnuson Clinical Center
of the NIH, and a consultant to the U.S. Army. Now quasi-retired, he is a
professor at the University of Maryland School of Medicine and the School of
Public Policy. He has also served on the boards of three companies
seeking to advance medical devices and technologies.
Internationally recognized for his research on the causes, treatment, and
prevention of infection in cancer patients, Dr. Schimpff has edited three
textbooks and more than 200 medical and scientific articles. He is board
certified in internal medicine, infectious diseases, and medical oncology and
has been a consultant to the University of Maryland on emerging bioterrorism
issues and a consultant to the U.S. Army on strategic planning, patient safety and the "OR of the Future."
Prior to his years at the University of Maryland, Dr. Schimpff was at the National Cancer
Institute's Baltimore Cancer Research Center for thirteen years where he became
internationally recognized for his research on the causes, treatment, and
prevention of infection in cancer patients; He then became Head of Infectious Diseases
at the University of Maryland School of Medicine; Professor of Medicine,
Pharmacology and Oncology and later professor of public policy at the
University of Maryland; Director of the University of Maryland Cancer Center;
and COO of the now twelve hospital University of Maryland Medical System.
As a medical futurist, Dr. Schimpff wrote
